As the new school year approaches, excitement takes over at Olentangy High School and in the community for the 2025 Braves football season. With summer workouts and two-a-days draw to a close, the team prepares for what promises to be an exciting and competitive season. Here are some things to look out for this season.
Players to watch
This year’s squad features a strong mix of competitive upperclassmen and talented underclassmen hungry to make their mark. The class of ’26 steps into new roles this year as leaders to the underclassmen.
Among the offensive starters, all eyes will be on Luke Grover, a senior committed to the University of Cincinnati. On defense, linebacker Christopher’ CJ’ Sanna demonstrates both intensity and leadership, while Kaden Gebhardt shows what it means to be a Brave. Sanna is committed to The Ohio State University, and Gebhardt is committed to play football at Clemson University.
“My favorite part of football is facing adversity with my teammates and watching as it makes us a better team with better chemistry,” said Sanna.
A few sophomores and juniors made their mark in summer scrimmages and look ahead to impactful seasons. Eyes will be on defensive junior player Jet Cornelius as he continues to make his mark on the varsity team.
New challenges
The schedule won’t be easy. Matchups against rival teams, such as Orange, Liberty and Berlin, will test the team’s preparation and resilience.
“I’m looking forward to Friday nights. We’ve worked really hard this offseason, so I’m looking forward to seeing it pay off firsthand,” said Sanna.
With a focused attitude and a strong team culture, this year’s group is ready to rise to the occasion. Injuries, of course, remain an unpredictable factor, and the depth of the roster will be tested as the season progresses. Younger players will need to step up if called upon.
Braves Nation
As always, the role of the Braves Nation cannot be overstated. Friday night lights in Olentangy bring out parents, alumni, students and fans from every corner of the area. The band, cheerleaders and student section create an atmosphere that fuels the team’s energy each week. Every week, the student section hosts a different theme. The themes range from pink outs to Roman togas. The section is led by senior section leaders who rally the school to cheer on the Braves at every game.
“I think students should attend games because Friday night lights are a great experience for students, you get to hang out with your friends and classmates while watching your high school compete,” said Cornelius.
The Braves’ first game of the 2025 season is set to kick off on Aug. 22 at Liberty High School. This game will be a big rival matchup for the team and a game that should not be missed. For more updates on the team, follow @ohssportsnetwork on Instagram and follow @ohsbravesfb on Instagram.
