This past year, Olentangy Boys Basketball Head Coach John Feasel has created his own basketball student section, the Feasel Weasels, which has been growing and getting crazier by each game. It was originally created to encourage more people to attend basketball games and draw more attention to the team and their historic start.

The Braves basketball team broke the record for best start of a season by beating the 1979-1980 team’s start to 6-0. They are currently 16-1, first in the OCC, and looking to close out the regular season strong and secure a solid playoff seed. And because of this recent success, Coach Feasel decided to come up with a fun way to get more students to get excited about the games.

The iconic T-shirt, which started it all.

“We need everyone at the games to support us, especially with how well we have started, and we are fun to watch,” senior captain Quentin Page said.

This section started off relatively small, with around 10-20 students attending Coach Feasel’s section per game. But as the team has gotten more impressive over the weeks, more people have decided to try out this student section, and it keeps growing with each game. Coach Feasel even released T-shirts for people around the section to wear, another way to get people pumped up and grow the Weasels. Even during the recent snowstorm and week off from school, Coach Feasel offered 200 free T-shirts to students who showed up ready to cheer on the Braves.

While the name is funny, the idea behind it is important. While hundreds of students go to football games, few attend other sporting events. Even when teams are winning state championships, they can be easly forgot. Coach Feasel’s love for the team is evident in his efforts to establish a student section and in his Schoology updates. Join the team this Saturday as they take on former State Champions, Orange High School.
