For the second consecutive year, the College Football Playoff has decided to try out the new 12-team playoff format, with a “new and improved” version. Which has seeded teams differently. It consists of the five highest-ranked conference champions, along with seven at-large bids. The four highest-ranked teams regardless of if they won a conference championship or not, are placed in bye week slots. Which you would think would be a good thing, being rewarded for being one of the top four teams in the country. But it has been proven to not be as good as it seems. Here’s why.
When the last of conference championships wrap up, there is a two week gap in between those games and the first round of the playoffs. Which is the same amount of time in between games as a bye week. All teams get one during the regular season, so teams know how to navigate this time gap to perfection. But this is where the negative part of the bye week comes in. The top four teams have to go three whole weeks without a single football game. Which is a huge problem for teams because this can knock teams out of their groove and kill their routine that they have followed for months, which has caused seven of the last eight teams with a bye to lose their first game of the playoffs, ending their season.
“I do think the bye week is a good thing but if they were to make sure teams with the bye actually have a chance, I think the committee should cut the time in between the conference championships to first round games from two weeks to one. That gives the teams with a bye only a two week break which is a smaller gap between games.” Maclain Campbell ‘27 said.
The biggest example of this “rust” factor that these teams get is the 2024 Oregon Ducks. Halfway through the regular season, they downed Ohio State 32-31, in a thriller. They went on to finish the season 13-0, winning the Big Ten championship. The Ducks received a bye in the first ever 12-team playoffs and became the runaway favorites to win the title. When Ohio State got their rematch, people thought the game would be similar to the clash from months prior. But the 24 day absence showed as Oregon quickly fell behind to the Buckeyes 31-0. With this trend continuing into the 2026 playoffs, people start to realize that this is more than a fluke.
“Yeah I remember that OSU-Oregon game like it was yesterday, and thats when I started to realize a problem with the bye week because theres no way you just lose by 20 to a team you beats months before. I one score game would’ve made way more sense, but not 3 scores.” Ricardo Salas ‘26 said.
This big problem that has come to light in the College Football world is something that needs to be addressed by the committee soon, as it could lead to teams possibly backing out of the tournament in the future or requesting another change in structure of the bracket.
