Main Campus Media has had an impressive year. From the Yearbook’s win of All-Ohio and Broadcasting’s six-hour livestream, this school year has been one for the books. And for all of their work, journalism students can be recognized at the Ohio Scholastic Media Awards, also known as OSMA. With two superiors (1st place), dozens of excellences (2nd place) and even more honorable mentions (3rd place), the programs have been happy with the outcome.
“I am so proud of our students for the work they put in to win these awards. For six of our eight broadcast students, this was their first year in the program, and the growth they have shown throughout the year is incredible,” first-year Multimedia and Broadcast teacher, Elizabeth MacDowell said. “They have shown dedication and their willingness to collaborate in order to learn how to report quality news to the school community, and for their hard work to be rewarded by the OSMA awards is incredible. I am so proud!”
With both of her classes wins, they have been beyond excited. After months of work, it feels like a validation to take home wins. Bhavana Balamurugan, a first year in Broadcasting, won excellence in On-Air talent.
“It means so much that me and Hayley’s hard work and practice paid off for this award and it really showcases all the anchoring skills we learned throughout this year,” Balamurugan said.
Another winner, Raina Machuveettil ‘26 won superior for her Alternative Copy with Bella Starr ‘26. With this being both their first years on The Beacon staff, the win caused a need for celebration. This was one of two superiors, the other being Social Media Reporting awarded to Starr and Gabby Van Frayen ‘25.
“Winning superior in my first year of Beacon is incredibly meaningful for me. I really wasn’t expecting any awards this year because it was only my first time, so this really surprised me. It makes me feel more confident in my writing and excited to keep going,” Machuveettil said. “I’m looking forward to pushing myself more and seeing how much I can grow from here.”
The Golden Arrow Yearbook staff was awarded months ago for All-Ohio by OSMA. This was their second year being awarded. The staff wants to take home the award again for the 24-25 school year.
Each program looks forward to a celebration of their wins as they prepare for the end of the school year. Follow @ohstangytoday to learn more about who won each award. Look out for the senior issue of The Beacon and senior interviews on ‘Tangy Today on May 9, as the year comes to a close.
