In the 2025-2026 school year, two teachers have the position of Student Experience Liaison. Their job is to guide and help new students feel comfortable and welcomed at the school. People remember their high school years as memorable times in their lives. However, new students can struggle to fit in, feel alone and miss out on the high school experience.
To help address this, OHS has planned a new program. John Chirico and Sauer have joined the new position of Student Experience Liaison. They are here to help out new students and offer support.
“One of our goals is to be a representative and advocate for students…Help meet the students’ needs emotionally and physically,” Chirico said.
They are there to make sure new students feel a part of the high school and receive the experience they deserve. It can be so difficult to be around new peers, teachers or buildings. In addition, they also work with the staff to make it a team effort so students can feel comfortable in all of their classes.
“We’re trying to connect students with clubs and help them find like-minded peers,” Chirico said.
We have a diverse group of students who come from different backgrounds, have different interests and even people who have moved from other countries. Chirico and Sauer are able to use it as a tool to find clubs, activities and classes to help new students meet people.
“Also, we are trying to revamp the experience of students who come from different schools or states, to start a meeting system where we can check in with students,” Chirico said.
Not only do they help students at a surface level, but they are helping them at a personal level. They take time one-on-one with students and understand their issues. Also they aren’t only here for new students. They are here to help any students who feel lonely and like they need help. The best way to contact them is by email, Schoology message or even stopping by their rooms in the English and Math hallway.
