Cash me ousside…actually respecting adults

The Internet is a peculiar place, no one can deny. It’s difficult to predict what phenomena will capture Twitter’s attention next, but for now it is Danielle Bregoli. This 13-year old girl has had the Internet wrapped around her finger since a video of her appearing on reality television show “Dr. Phil” went viral. In the now infamous interview, Bregoli is brought to Dr. Phil because of frequent violent arguments with her mother, Barbara Ann Peskowitz. After irritably discussing the issue, Bregoli goes on to refer to the entire studio audience as “hoes” and delivers her famous tag line “Cash me ousside, how bout dah?” when threatening to fight the audience.

Since the video has gone viral, Bregoli has gained national recognition and is being awarded for her vulgar behavior. She was featured in a Kodak Black music video for his song, “Everything 1K” and rumors of a new reality television show dedicated to Bregoli’s life are surfacing. Sweatshirts brandishing the phrase are rising in popularity on Internet stores, with Bregoli getting a share of the profits. The original video of Bregoli’s interview with Dr. Phil has reached over a million views, according to YouTube.

A girl so blatantly disrespecting adults, threatening violence and promoting a dangerous lifestyle does not deserve fame and recognition. Does the Internet really have nothing better to do than obsess over a vulgar 13-year old girl? With every like, retweet and comment Bregoli receives, her actions are validated and even promoted.

Instead of focusing on a rude, attention-seeking girl who clearly has no consideration for others, why don’t we, as a society, celebrate teenagers and young adults who are doing good in the community? Role models like Malala Yousafzai and Emma Watson are deserving of every ounce of respect and admiration they receive. Bregoli is not. Sure, the video is good for a laugh, but when given careful consideration, it is clear Bregoli does not deserve this much fame. There are teenagers earning scholarships, volunteering and working hard every day, yet Bregoli is the one drowning in money, and fame. All because of a funny interview. With Dr. Phil. Interesting.

Bregoli is just one instance of the Internet investing far too much in an unworthy cause. However, she is the most relevant and ridiculous example to date. Next time you hear the words “Cash me ousside” or see a video about Bregoli pop up on your Twitter and YouTube feed, do me, and everyone else a huge favor; ignore it. Don’t contribute to the pathetic promotion and instigation of her behavior. Instead, spread positive stories about individuals who have worked for their recognition. For example, rather than re-watching Bregoli’s interview with Dr. Phil, watch Malala Yousafzai’s United Nations speech on the importance of women’s rights and education. For convenience, the video is below.
