The world celebrates women’s history month
A month dedicated to the ladies

The month of March is a time dedicated to all women in history who have helped make society what it is today. Women have shaped society to become a place where everybody can thrive and standout without the stress of judgement.

Women’s history month started out as women’s history week. In 1978 in Santa Rosa, California a Education team planned to host a week dedicated to women. This week was led by a lady named Molly Murphy McGregor who was a local teacher. Throughout this week they celebrated women’s culture, as well as presentations in schools to show ladies importance.

After other communities saw their celebration and started to join in on the celebration for women. In July of 1978 historian Gerda Lerner held a 15 day conference for women history at Sarah Lawrence college. After the conference many historians and women activists began to push for a National Women’s History Week.

These ladies ended up successful and in February of 1980 President Jimmy Carter designated the week of March 2-8 of 1980 as National History Women’s Week.

Years after this success Congress promoted schools to use presentations and celebrations to recognize the accomplishments these ladies had.

In 1987 after the National Women’s History Project had petitioned for women’s history week Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which stated March of 1987 as “Women’s History Month.”

As of then the month of March has been celebrated as Women’s HIstory Month and a month of full women’s celebrations and great achievements.

“I think for many years women’s contribution to our countries history has been overlooked or neglected and so having a month to remind us of the importance of these valuable contributions is important,” history teacher Tyler Shaw said.

Women’s History Month has thrived over the years. Today we celebrate the month through various different events. Schools dedicate days where they talk about how women helped change society to today. They will do activities based on events or movements women have done to show the importance of them. In addition, schools will also have assemblies with presentations which explain different women’s lives and what they did, so they can show students their significance in history.

“Women really get stepped on through history and still like today and it is important to recognize women that were very influential behind the scenes,” sophomore Lucia Tomcik said.

Furthermore, communities will also host parades or events so a larger scale of people can come together to celebrate. It is important we recognize all the achievements women have accomplished through history.

“Because we came a long way. We were viewed as objects and to an extent we still are but we have allowed our community to give us self confidence and our worth,” sophomore Reghan Rockhold said.

Women’s history month is important and deserves to be celebrated and recognized by everybody.
