National Honor Society will induct students across the nation this fall. However, before induction, students must complete applications. OHS students turned in applications on Friday, Sept. 8th.

National Honor Society inducts students for several reasons. Students must encompass certain qualities to be part of the society.

“NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership and character,” according to the National Honor Society Website.

These areas of excellence provide minimum requirements needed to apply. These requirements include a weighted 3.5 GPA, 48 service hours for juniors and 72 service hours for seniors.

When students are eligible to apply, a letter is sent to their homes with the requirements for the application. This includes a character and leadership form from two teacher and community sources.

“Students should think about a two week advance for a letter of recommendation,”  NHS adviser Whitney Hamilton said.

Applicants also must write thank you notes to those who recommended them, and then provide proof of the notes. Finally, a $45 check must be enclosed for membership fees.

Once all the application requirements have been fulfilled and turned in, the student selection process begins.

“We have a committee of OHS staff with a range of discipline to select the students, so it’s a unbiased decision,” NHS adviser Lauren Wozniak said.

There is still a chance for students who won’t qualify for this year’s induction, but they can apply for next year.

Yes, students can apply again as long as they have the service hours and GPA,” Wozniak said.

The induction ceremony is the final step to becoming a member into NHS. This ceremony includes a candle lighting ritual, a biography about the student and dessert.
