The 2024 Video Music Awards were held on Sept. 11 at the UBS arena in Elmont, New York. The awards show was hosted by the American rapper, Megan Thee Stallion. Other popular artists like Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Camilla Cabello, Sabrina Carpenter and Katy Perry also performed. However, the main “talk of the night” were the outfits worn by the musicians at the start of the awards show.
- Sabrina Carpenter
At the top of the list was Sabrina Carpenter with the best outfit from the 2024 Video Music Awards show. The silver dress paired with a deep red lipstick and a 90’s inspired blowout hairdo gave Carpenter a timeless look. Another intricate detail of the dress was the sweetheart neckline trimmed with diamonds to add a sparkle effect. What viewers did not know about Carpenter’s dress, styled by American fashion designer, Robert Mackie, was it had already been worn in 1991 by American singer, songwriter and actress, Madonna. In fact, Madonna was the one who came up with the design of the dress along with Mackie’s final touches. Viewers applauded Carpenter’s bold decision to lean into the Old Hollywood style of fashion instead of modern trends. Since vintage styles became popular at the start of 2024, it was about time for this genre of fashion to have its moment in the spotlight.
2. Halsey
Next on the list, I have decided to put Halsey for her different approach to fashion at this year’s VMA’s. It was not unexpected for Halsey to wear a unique and cut-edge style of dress; however, this outfit was a surprise. The designer, Gianni Versace, created this dress back in 1996 from the fall couture collection and was first worn by model and actor, Elizabeth Hurley. This idea reminded me of Sabrina Carpenter’s look because both singers chose to re-wear outfits past celebrities wore. Also, unlike other celebrities, Halsey decided to wear the color red in her dress and hair. Most fashion designers would say this would be too much of one color, but Halsey pulled it off well. I also liked the zigzag of glitter on the dress to add a little more bling. Therefore, I was impressed with Halsey’s bold approach to what to wear for the recent VMA’S.
3. Taylor Swift
At the bottom of my list, I have Taylor Swift with this show-stopper of a dress. Designed by Christian Dior, Swift wore a yellow plaid bustier which was attached to a skirt paired with velvet black pants and leather gloves. To top it off, Swift completed her look with a classic pair of Stuart Weitzman Maverick thigh high boots. This look reminded me of one of Swift’s albums, “Reputation”, because of its dark and edgy vibe. Swift has been known to hint at “Taylor’s Version” album releases at the past VMA shows, so this particular outfit left fans on the edge of their seats as they hoped for a release date of the Reputation album to be announced. However, Swift has not yet given a release date for her new version of this album. Fans and reporters will make sure to watch Swift’s style choices as they wait for more hints at another album drop.
