Jeremy K. builds bench in service to others

A bench is usually just a boring piece of wood people sit on. Although, when you see it through the eyes of Jeremy Kendle ‘18, it’s a community service project and a way to benefit his peers.

Kendle, apart of the boys Eagle Scout troop 843 decided to give back to the community and his school by taking the initiative to build a wooden bench in front of the school’s bus loop. The school needed a new bench in order to be used by students so that way they would have a gathering place and a waiting area. Kendle had decided to start the project all on his own, while simultaneously funding the project by himself.

“The values it taught him were things such as leadership, teamwork and perseverance,” Principal Tom McDonnell said.

Kendle was able to put up the benches in the school within a weekend with the help of his scout adviser.

“It also gave him the meaning of community service, such as giving yourself to others and being goal driven,” McDonnell said.

Kendle’s main resource for the funding was Michael’s Food distribution by selling meat products to teachers, friends and family. “The most difficult part about it was filling out the paperwork and assembling it step by step as well as telling people what to do,” Kendle said “It also got really tedious at times,” Kendle had got the idea from a football athletic booster parent, Mr. McCulley. Kendle said it was his father who gave him the motivation and pushed him. Kendle said he wants to continue to do projects like this because it taught him the meaning of community service and giving back to his community.
