On Jan. 21, a DECA group created a fundraiser to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer camp which helps kids who were diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. DECA group: Aesha Kadiru ’25, Grace Nelson ’25, Lauren Petska ’25 and Kenzie Hicks ’25 have been in action since July of 2024.
“Now, we are focused on the execution of events. Back in July it was mainly about educating ourselves about Muscular Dystrophy,” campaign designer Nelson ’25 said.
Their hard work and dedication will assist the greater good of these kids. This balloon drop raised $3,380 and they profited $1,280. Let’s recap the day of the powerful balloon drop.
180 people paid for balloons and. 180 balloons were dropped. Out of all of those balloons, Davison Orthodontics won the big prize of $2,000. After months of work, the DECA group has accomplished an impactful way to fundraise money for a remarkable organization.
“Before our project, most people didn’t understand Muscular Dystrophy. Now I hope our funds will raise awareness,” event coordinator Hicks’ 25 said.
The group set up right before the game. Before the balloons dropped, they had a short speech to express how grateful they were for people who bought balloons. They explained about the MDA camp and how the money is going to a good cause.
They endorsed this project on TikTok, Instagram and ‘Tangy Today. On Instagram they collaborated with the district’s accounts to ensure that the community knew about this event. On average, the social media post got 1,729 views. After the event ended, these exceptional girls were lucky enough to be part of the local news, WBNS-10TV. The segment included a recap of the event and project.
“A key factor to our success was our promotion strategy. We used social media platforms, school broadcast, and word of mouth to spread,” Kadiru said. “This event was a huge success, especially supporting a cause like MDA camp. It not only brought the community together.”
The MDA Camp will be so thankful for this wonderful donation. The camp provides a safe and accessible environment where kids can participate in multiple activities. This is a way for these kids to gain a sense of independence. The promotion for this project was so well done, the whole Olentangy community knew about this fundraiser. Overall, this DECA group and the whole fundraiser was a great success.
