A legion can be described as a mass or an army made up of 2,000 or more people and that is exactly what Lisa’s Legion is. The group known as Lisa’s Legion was created by Lisa Russ’ children, Rachel Russ-Merrick and Jason Russ to show support for L. Russ as she fought against pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer, like most illnesses, is never mentioned until someone faces it.
“I just heard stage four, and I knew that was not good. I have heard that pancreatic cancer was not good, but I did not know what it was,” Merrick said.
Pancreatic cancer grows in the pancreas, which is located deep in the abdomen between the stomach and the spine. In a healthy body, the pancreas creates enzymes which help aid in digestion and also create hormones that control blood-sugar levels; however, the body can start to create bad tissues called tumors.
“I believe there does need to be more research as there is a low rate of people living after a diagnosis. Doctors and the community need to figure out the signs of pancreatic cancer before it becomes fatal,” junior Caleb Suitor said.
According to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, or PanCAN, it is estimated that “66,440 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2024.”
That is a very large number. L. Russ was one of those people who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March of 2024, which is why Lisa’s Legion was created. The legion’s goal is to support the important work PanCAN is doing to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer and to promote early detections.
“I would support raising awareness because pancreatic cancer is one of the most fatal cancers with a low survival rate and it needs to be studied more in order to catch it before it progresses too much,” Suitor said.
Sadly L. Russ passed away in October of 2024, but this was not the end for Lisa’s Legion. The legion is now going to focus on the fight against pancreatic cancer through PanCAN and opening a foundation in memory of L. Russ. The foundation will focus on resources for families like meal plans, potential treatment options and more awareness about cancer.
“Advocate for yourself. You know your body,” Merrick said.
Merrick wants people to remember to stay strong and determined no matter what because that is what her mom did during her fight with pancreatic cancer. To get involved in the fight against pancreatic cancer, consider being a part of PurpleStride hosted by PanCAN, or stay informed about what Lisa’s Legion goes on to do next.
