Over two decades after the Broadway musical “Wicked” opened, director Jon M. Chu released “Wicked” the movie. With a star-studded cast and famous director people had high expectations of the movie, the film danced its way to over 350 million dollars in box offices. Plus, with an audience source of 96% and over 25,000 reviews they defied expectations. After I watched the film I understood the hype, and as a theater nerd I believe this film did justice to the Broadway musical.
Actress Ariana Grande, who played Glinda, performed a wicked execution of the beloved character. I was unsure at first; however, I trusted her after her interviews and love for the show. She did only meet my expectations but blew the roof off. She opened the show with “No One Mourns the Wicked” and I knew I was in for a treat. Her vocals and emotions command the scenes, and she always took my attention away with her humor and reactions.
Another fantastic actress was Cynthia Erivo, who played Elphaba, was thoughtful and carried the film with her vocals. Her performance of “The Wizard And I” took my breath away. In the past, I never loved the song; however, Erivo made me adore the song. She was strong and demanded your attention with her vocals. I cannot wait to hear her sing “No Good Deed” in part two as it is my favorite song in the original show.
Actor Jonathan Bailey, who played Prince Fiyero, had me in laughter the entire movie. His character is an icon, and Bailey brought it to life as he danced and sang. His performance was one of my favorites in the film.
Along with popular actors and actresses, the film was directed by a musical movie veteran. Chu has directed “In the Heights” and the “Step Up” franchise. With his pedigree in musical movies people expected a well-done movie and he completed the task. Chu and the set designers brought the world of Oz to life. I believe there will be a battle at the Oscars for set design as “Wicked” go head-to-head with other new movie releases.
I believe that this film is the best musical movie to grace theatres. I believe this film will win multiple Oscars such as Actress in a Leading Role, Cinematography, Directing and Costume Design. As this is the best movie I have seen in 2024, I would rank it a five out of five stars.
