Every November 11th, we take a moment to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. We take this day to appreciate their dedication, reflect on their sacrifices and celebrate their commitment to freedom. The sacrifices these veterans made are the foundation of our freedom today.
“Veterans Day is important because a lot of our older generations of veterans didn’t get the recognition they deserved, especially after Vietnam War veterans came home and were spit on and called rude names. Although people have different views on wars, those people still deserve our thanks for signing up to do whatever it takes to defend our constitution,” veteran Jamie Christopher said.
Veterans Day was first known as Armistice Day which marked the end of World War 1 on Nov. 11, 1918. Around 1954 the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all veterans, not just those who served in WW1. Veterans Day, unlike Memorial Day which honors those who died in service, celebrates all who served. This includes ceremonies, parades and education activities to show appreciation.
“I think Veterans Day is important because there’s so many individuals out there that we don’t look at as someone who has fought for our country and by having a day to recognize them, they can feel the thanks that they deserve for their dedication to protecting our nation,” Sydney Funk ‘27 said.
This day is significant because it provides an opportunity for Americans to express gratitude towards veterans and acknowledge the contributions, they have made for us and our country. It is so important to admire all who served for us because no hard work and dedication should go unnoticed.
“Many people gave their lives for this country and fought day after day for our freedom. This day is so important to honor and stand all their hard work,” Hannah Mayle ‘28 said.
In the end, Veterans Day is a vital occasion to honor the bravery and sacrifices of those who have served in the U.S. military. When we celebrate Veterans Day, we not only pay tribute to the past and present heroes, but also inspire future generations to appreciate and uphold the values of this service. This is a day our nation should come together in gratitude, recognize the powerful impact these individuals have had on our security, and understand no veteran’s hard work and dedication should go unnoticed.
