Everyday technology gains a larger role in society, schools all over the world have included the use of technology such as computers and iPads in the lives of students. It helps students to stay organized, increase grade efficiency and access unlimited information. Computers have changed the way we learn. As paper-based education becomes a thing of the past, how may this affect our education? Although it may seem the simple answer is computers are more efficient than paper, technology is often unreliable.
“I have found that computers are very beneficial to get substitute teachers the work, however the school computers are terrible and slow,” biology teacher Sarah Angel said.
A struggle often seen in classrooms is the internet. Students wait for computers to load – which can take up to ten minutes – and valuable class time is wasted. Another common misconception people believe is notes on computers are faster, however studies say otherwise.
“Those who write by hand on paper are 25% quicker at note-taking tasks than those who use digital technology,” according to NeurocienceNews.com
Also, students are less prone to memorize the information Furthermore, technology can lead to a decrease in mental health.
“Research has shown that reading on a computer screen is more fatiguing,” according to ImpactPartOfMyCollege.com
Seven hours a day in front of a computer often leaves students without enough energy to partake in after school activities. Often when students are tired, they can experience headaches and find it harder to focus on class.
“Staring at a computer for a long period of time gives me headaches,” sophomore Mara Fife said.
Not only is it bad for physical health a number of studies have shown technology use has a direct connection to anxiety and depression. The more time spent on our devices we are less prone to interact with our peers which can lead to social isolation and a fear to ask for help.
“When using computers, I find that it’s easier to get distracted and do other work or play games,” senior Morgan Billiter said.
With the use of technology students are less focused on work and students are given easy access to other websites. Computers lead students to get off task and find themselves behind in classwork. Therefore, teachers should consider the switch to more hands-on screen free education.
