As we finish out September, it is important to highlight Suicide Prevention Month. This is a significant month to spread awareness for suicide prevention. We acknowledge the millions of lives who face suicidal thoughts on a day-to-day basis, as well as the millions of lives we lost to this tragedy. It is time to cherish every moment because you never know when somebody’s last day will be. Just remember, each person has their own individual battles, so do not forget to reach out to loved ones.
Suicide is the third cause of death in the United States for ages 15-29. Over 720,000 people die a year from suicide. Mental health impacts people all over the world. September is a time for loved ones we lost, the ones who survived, people scared to speak up, those who are mentally unstable, those who have attempted and any other person affected by this epidemic.
“Celebrating this month helps break the stigma around mental health and suicide, encourages those who are struggling to seek help, and fosters a supportive community,” health teacher Jordyn Wolfe said.
Even though the main concept of the month is to remember and celebrate the community, it is also about awareness on the matter.
When people celebrate the saddest memories, it is hard, as they reminisce on the past which is often difficult at times. But there are multiple ways to celebrate this month. One way is to get involved, donate to charities and organizations that support the cause, spread the word and partake in local events around the area. These are all wonderful ways to take action.
Another simple action can be to touch base with friends and family or make posters or banners to hang around your community about the facts and how to help.
“I think suicide prevention month is over-shined, and it needs to be recognized more,” senior Morgan Billiter said.
Not everybody knows what suicide prevention is and why we celebrate it, so be the one to help them understand.
If you or a loved one have suicidal thoughts, please contact a help line or 911. Do not lose the fight to mental health. Suicide prevention month is a time to celebrate and honor ones we have lost. Take the time to tell someone you love them; you never know what somebody struggles with. Help them stay in this world.

I love this article. Suicide prevention awareness is so important, if it wasn’t for this article I wouldn’t have known that September is World Suicide Prevention Day. I would appreciate the world more and start paying attention to those who need help.
