The Columbus Crew soccer team played the Los Angeles FC on Sunday Aug. 25 in the Leagues Cup. The Crew came out on top with a 3-1 win over LAFC.
“I am happy for the fans and my family. This is my job and I am glad my teammates can enjoy it,” Hernández said in an interview after the game.
Cucho Hernandez is a star on the Crew. Hernandez is from Columbia and came to the Crew in 2022. Hernandez has scored 38 goals in his career as a forward on the Crew. He has helped the Crew win their third MLS cup and to a Leagues cup win.
“My favorite player on the Crew is Cucho because he scores a lot,” Gianna Alteri, a student at OHS said.
The Leagues cup game was scoreless up until the 45th minute when Hernandez scored a goal for the Crew. In the 57th minute Olivier Giruod scored for LAFC and the game stayed 1-1 until extra time when Hernandez and Jacen Russle-Rowe scored again for the Crew to finish the 3-1 win.
“This is so difficult to play against them because we know that if we are not well-balanced, we are dead,” Wilfried Nancy, head coach for the Crew, told the Columbus Dispatch.
The Crew have two months of regular season games left this fall. They play through October. Their final game of the fall is against New York on Oct.19. The next game is tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
“The league cup game was so energetic. It was definitely the best crew game I have ever been to. The energy was high, the atmosphere was amazing and I had so much fun,” Melanie Pitzer said, a season ticket holder for the Columbus Crew who was at the game.
People can watch the Crew on Apple TV with the MLS package or on Direct TV. Fans can get tickets on the Crew website to see the game at Lower.com Stadium. Be sure to support the Crew tomorrow night against Seattle.
