As a new addition to the team, Lexi Opdycke starts her first year teaching. Opdycke went to college at Wittenberg University and earned her degree in history, which now helps her classes in both U.S. Government and Sociology.
“My favorite part about teaching is working with my students every day and learning from them,” Opdycke said.
Although she prefers not to wake up so early for the start of the school day, it is worth it to see her students’ jovial faces and learn with them as she takes it day by day. Opdycke had only heard positive comments about working here, and feels lucky for the opportunity, while also being both excited and surprised by all the school spirit present here that gave her such a warm welcome.
“She rarely gives homework which eases stress levels overall. Her class isn’t a class you have to worry about in the day since she makes her class environment really chill,” junior Camryn Wenter said.
Students agree Opdycke’s classes flow with ease, and she finds a way to learn materials in a different way each week. She presents notes through fun slideshows, interactive games, activities and group work.
“The fact that she’s a first-year teacher isn’t evident at all because she’s so well prepared and collected for anything the school year might bring,” junior Erika Stake said.
Not only is this Opdycke’s first year teaching here, but it is also her first year being a teacher in her career. It can be understood why she would be nervous to make this big jump, but she does a wonderful job at going above and beyond for her students and continues to thrive in our inclusive environment.
“I feel like I have already grown as a teacher in these first few weeks,” Opdycke said.
