From a criminal to an icon, to a nobody, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard was freed on parole on Dec. 28, 2023. After being charged with second-degree murder of her mother, Blanchard was in prison for over a decade and became famous for the trauma of her case. After being released she was viral, but now there is no spotlight on her. So, what happened to Blanchard?
“She married some other guy and is having a baby,” Evie Davis ‘27 said. “She needs some help with her mental health.”
Davis’ friend, Senior Gabreilla Van Frayen debated her friend on what Blanchard was up to.
“No, she had this guy’s baby while being with another guy and is not marrying that guy,” Van Frayen said.
A quick look at Blanchard’s Instagram and all you see is a pregnant woman. She has been busy with other normal tasks that famous people tend to do.
Blanchard with co-writer Melissa Moore has written a book, My Time to Stand: A Memoir. Along with her memoir she has started a YouTube channel where she films daily vlogs about being a pregnant woman. She posts videos of her baby bump and her new man as she lives a new life. But why are some people die-hard fans? Why do they debate over opinions on this now almost-normal woman?
As a society, true crime seems to entice us, and this can be proven by the rate at which crime shows skyrocket in views and popularity. Psychology teacher Taylor Thines discussed why as a society we enjoy true crime.
“People often seek to reconcile their understanding of the world with the darker aspects of human nature. True crime allows individuals to explore complex moral dilemmas, creating a tension that can be both unsettling and fascinating (aka cognitive dissonance),” Thines said.
With this love of true crime and what we may call ‘monsters’, society is ingrained to want drama. But Blanchard is not a fire starter; she is pregnant with a new man.
